Amritpal Sandhu is a Brisbane-based emerging artist of Punjabi, North Indian descent whose practice centres on painting and printmaking. Her work investigates the relationship between identity and space, focusing on how the human face and its surroundings intersect and inform one another. Masks function as recurring motifs, operating as devices that both reveal and conceal, mediating the connection between inner self and external world.

Working with a distinct surrealist sensibility, Sandhu frequently reimagines birds as people within her masked imagery, collapsing boundaries between figure, environment and psyche. In these works, she explores what she describes as “the mask upon the face and the face on the body,” using layered, hybrid forms to consider how personality, culture and context are carried, performed and perceived.
