From the artist
The Books of Life series is drawn from my own personal story and features moments that have contributed to my journey through life. Each book contains a single word reproduced in Japanese and English representing the two cultures I live between.
The images are created using photographs of my childhood that have been hand-coloured and the figures scratched into the timber to embed them into the scene.
The connection to my past is further strengthened by the way the two halves of the storybook are joined together using a finger joint, a traditional kumiki woodworking technique in Japan.
Each artwork matches one of the two standard paperback novel sizes available in Japan and, like all good books, I hope that the reader will find something in my story that evokes memories of their own life and reminds them of what they value most.
