In Dissembling Assembly, Chris Hagen reflects on how we come to understand the world, and how knowledge is shaped as much by experience as it is by information. The works sit in the space between knowing and not knowing, where meaning is built slowly, layered over time, and never quite fixed.
Raised in northern Wisconsin by a biologist and a journalist, Hagen grew up between two ways of making sense of things: observation and storytelling. That tension continues to run through his practice. His works hold structure and uncertainty at once, allowing order to emerge while leaving room for doubt, intuition and change.
Across the series, what is visible is only part of the story. Some elements announce themselves clearly, while others sit quietly, asking for time and attention. Together, they mirror the way we absorb information, interpret it, and revise it, again and again. This is work that rewards slowing down, trusting your senses, and letting meaning unfold rather than arrive fully formed.
